History

Giresun University Faculty of Education is among Türkiye’s well-established educational institutions and holds an important place in the country’s tradition of primary school teacher education. The Department of Primary Education within the Faculty has continued its educational activities through successive restructuring processes since its establishment, with the aim of training qualified teachers to serve at the primary school level.

Until 1982, the institution carried out teacher education activities under the Ministry of National Education. After that date, it was transformed into Giresun School of Education affiliated with Karadeniz Technical University. This structural transformation in teacher education aimed to integrate the institution into the higher education system and enhance its academic quality.

In 1992, four-year undergraduate teacher education programs began to be offered within Karadeniz Technical University Giresun Faculty of Education. During this period, the Department of Primary Education continued its educational activities in line with contemporary approaches to teacher education. The Department adopted a holistic teacher education model that integrates subject matter knowledge, pedagogical formation, and general culture components.

Following the establishment of Giresun University on March 17, 2006, the Faculty of Education and the Department of Primary Education within it continued their educational activities as academic units affiliated with Giresun University. Since then, the Department’s curricula have been continuously updated in accordance with the framework programs determined by the Council of Higher Education, the curricula of the Ministry of National Education, and current developments in educational sciences.
